'The national dialogue was making progress,' he said, 'but if young Muslims avoid young Christians, we shall have no true homeland.'Instructing people on the virtues of 'cooperating amongst ourselves,' Sfeir cited the example of lawyers, doctors and businesspeople who were able to work together despite having different faiths. MP Lahoud''s challenge TheDailyStar For all his qualities, Metn MP Nassib Lahoud has not lived up to the expectations of those who support his gospel of reform. It is hard to blame him for this 'failure,' though, because the ascension of his cousin and rival, Emile Lahoud, to the nation''s presidency has tightly restricted his options: His eloquent condemnations of the status quo have had to become less passionate and less numerous, lest he appear to be expressing sour grapes. The MP''s formation of a new party offers an opportunity to compensate for his relative silence over the past couple of years, but this can only take place if his movement is as different from existing groups as he is from most of his fellow legislators. Specifically, the new grouping must steer clear of the ineffectual and often hypocritical sloganeering practiced by its opposite numbers.
